Makeup professionals answer your questions You've got
questions about makeup. We've got answers from Sarah Brucker, makeup artist at
and owner of Blush, 249 N. Water St., and Shelly Yingling, a specialist at Sephora
in Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa.
Q: Should makeup match your clothes?
A:
No. Makeup should suit your complexion. Coordinate warm or cool tones in clothing
with similar tones in makeup. "You should not wear eye shadow simply to match
your blouse color," Yingling said.
Q: How do you choose and apply concealer?
A: Concealer goes
under the eyes and on blemishes. Use a non-creasing one and dab it on with a small
brush. Brucker recommends applying concealer last and placing it in the inner-nose
and corner-eye areas and directly under the lash line.
Q: Why should you
wear a lip liner?
A: Lip liner holds lip color, stick or gloss in place
and prevents it from bleeding.
Q: What's the difference between liquid liner
and pencil liner for the eyes?
A: Liquid liner looks bold while pencil liner
looks soft.
Q: What shape is best for brows?
A: Everyone should go
for a natural looking brow that fits the shape of their face, Brucker said. "Super
thin brows are outdated and harsh," she added. Brows should line up with
the center of the nostril, move to an arch that falls above the pupil and end
with the length of the eye.
Q: Are eyelash curlers a necessity?
A:
Yes, if you have straight lashes and you want to curl them to open up the eye,
Yingling said. If you do use one, Brucker offers this tip: heat an eyelash curler
with a blow dryer to get a stronger curl.
Q: What products should be high-end
brands or from high-end stores vs. low-end brands or what's found in drugstores?
A:
Spend the money necessary for quality basics, such as brushes, foundation, primer
and concealer. Experiment with low-end brands of mascara, eye shadow and lip color.
Q:
How do you make color pop on thin lips?
A: If you have a slimmer lip, use
a lip liner and a glossy look in a bright color, Yingling says. If you like a
deeper or darker shade, use a lip plumper underneath, she adds.
